This
volume is the fourth in a series presenting authoritative and balanced
scientific reviews of all aspects of the Orchidaceae. It includes articles
on seven different topics - some of which have not been critically reviewed
before as well as an extensive appendix on orchid diseases. The
opening chapter, by a major contributor to orchid science and horticulture,
traces the development of orchid cultivation in Southeast Asia.
Next is an article on patterns and processes in orchid evolution. Of the remaining chapters, one deals with pollination mechanisms of orchids and their evolution, and the others with orchid stomatat, velamen (the unique tissue found in orchid roots), the development of pollen and accessory structures, and respiration. The glossaries that accompany each chapter are a new feature. |
